EXTREME RAINFALL IN MINNESOTA: 6 HISTORIC STORMS

Living in Minnesota means putting up with all kinds of severe weather, like hail storms, epic snowfalls, sleet, tornadoes, and floods. Still, weather in the Twin Cities area is relatively mild – at least mild enough that we all still talk about the 1991 Halloween Blizzard every year, decades after it happened.

But what about the most extreme rainfall in Minnesota’s history? Did you know that our state has been through some very serious rainfall and flooding events?

In this post from Restoration Network, we list six extreme rainfall events dug from the Minnesota history books. Call on us 24/7 for storm damage restoration services in the Twin Cities area!

AUGUST 6, 1866, IN SOUTHERN MINNESOTA

Known as the Wiesel Flood, 261.62 mm of rain was recorded in the southern part of Minnesota.

JULY 17-19, 1867, IN CENTRAL MINNESOTA

Historians refer to it as ‘Minnesota’s Greatest Thunderstorm” in the past 200 years. Around 914 mm of rain fell within 36 hours, resulting in one of the most destructive storms in the state’s history.

JUNE 21, 1983, IN CENTRAL MINNESOTA.

Heavy rainfall of around 203 mm hit several areas, including Buffalo, Litchfield, Clearwater, and Big Lake.

AUGUST 18-20, 2007, IN SOUTHEASTERN MINNESOTA

More than 400mm of rainfall was recorded in 24 hours near the south of Hokah. This was one of the highest rainfall in Minnesota in a single day. The torrential downpour lasted for three days, resulting in flooding houses and commercial property.

SEPTEMBER 7, 1991, IN CENTRAL MINNESOTA

The rainfall spread through central Minnesota with an intensity of 279.4 mm in Glencoe and nearby areas.

JULY 23-24, 1987 TWIN CITIES SUPERSTORM

Approximately 220 mm of rain hit several parts of the Twin Cities, producing one of the worst flash floods in the cities.

WHAT IS THE GREATEST RAINFALL IN A 24-HOUR PERIOD IN MINNESOTA?

According to the Minnesota State Climatology Office database, the highest 24-hour record for rainfall stands at 437.13mm. A heavy downpour hit the state on August 18-20, 2007, breaking the previous record of 275.33mm made on July 22, 1972.

The storm caused massive destruction in the affected areas, destroying windows, houses, cars, and other properties.
