In Minnesota, tornadoes usually occur from March to November, with the most expected months being May to September. Almost every year for the past few decades, our state has recorded its highest number of tornadoes in June, making it the peak month for tornadoes.

Apart from this, tornadoes also occur frequently in July, August, and September.

On average, Minnesota experiences 27 tornadoes per year. A total of 2218 tornadoes have hit Minnesota from 1950 to 2021.

What Are the Deadliest Tornadoes in Minnesota?

Minnesota has gone through its fair share of tornadoes in the last few centuries.

Some of the most severe tornadoes to hit the state were witnessed on:

• August 21, 1883: F5 tornado in Rochester killed 37 people.
• April 14, 1886: The deadliest tornado in Minnesota’s history hit Sauk Rapids. It killed 72 people.
• June 22, 1919: Believed to be the second-deadliest tornado in the state, it came through Fergus Falls and killed 59 people.
• May 6, 1965: A combination of four F4 tornadoes tore through the Twin Cities, claiming 13 lives.
• June 16, 1992: The second-largest tornado outbreak formed by 27 twisters.
• March 29, 1998: Two tornadoes, F3 and F4 each, passed Comfrey and St. Peter.
• June 17, 2010: The largest tornado outbreak in Minnesota was reported, consisting of 48 twisters.

What Year Did Minnesota Have the Most Tornadoes?

The highest number of tornadoes was seen in 2010, when the state was hit by 113 tornadoes that wreaked havoc on many communities, with hundreds of homes destroyed by storm damage.
